Watch: Hip Hop in conversation with Tamizha Adhi
There is a horrifying universe where Chennai’s iconic Ripon Building, the seat of the Greater Chennai Corporation, lies destroyed. One sees vines growing through a burnt-out, iconic colonial building – an apparent victim of an apocalyptic war. It is amidst the rubble and conflict where the hip-hop Tamizha Adhi emerges. In this film, set in a fictitious southern province, he is the hero, director, producer, music director and (Oof) lyricist. Was it equally a struggle to play so many roles for the film?
At PGS Studios in Vanagaram, Adhi sits down for a chat the hindu. He is exhausted but excited after directing a few promotional videos for the film. The film is releasing soon. He says that today everything is based on content and collaborations, especially since this is his first production under the Hip Hop Tamizha banner.

“It’s completely ours and it feels like a visionary project… (It’s) a bit different from my regular films P.T. Sir And Veeran In which I play a neighbour boy. However, this feels like the next step for me. It is apocalyptic, but will definitely be my trademark entertainment,” he says.
Adhi says shooting with seasoned professionals like Nassar and Natarajan “Natty” Subramanian has proven that interesting professional relationships are crucial to lasting friendships in the industry. That, and maintaining a gang of his own that he has relied on over the years, right from college. “My office is full of my boys. Every day, work is fun because there are so many interesting ideas and a vision. While Adhi has other projects as well, music, which is his claim to fame, is still an active part of his life. This is why he is all set to perform at Codissia Grounds in Coimbatore on September 8 as part of his world tour Return of the Dragon.
The son of the soil singer had many upbeat moments at a concert in Coimbatore. He said he has many favourite songs, including Sakkarakatti And Ithir Neechal“It will be a different atmosphere. During our performances at Wembley (stadium in London) and in Malaysia, most people were standing up and dancing. If you want a really good experience, come with your mates and enjoy the atmosphere,” he says.
Adhi is one of the first well-known independent composers in the Tamil scene. Many of his early songs such as Vadi Pulla Vadiwas made on a very low budget with several of the singer’s friends, whom the singer has known for many years. He says his intention is to ensure that more interesting artistes emerge in Tamil. This is why he urges them to create their own brand. He said that when he directs or produces new content, he often tries to highlight their skills.

He says, “Even if you remove all the tags like ‘actor’, ‘director’, there will still be an independent artist in me. I want to stay in touch with the community. That’s why we started Underground Tribe. Many independent artists have used this platform to make their mark.”
Which current stars are on his playlist? He says, “I listen to all the new songs. Recently I listened to Kelly.Thi. I am a rapper, so I also listen to Pal Dabba, Asal Kolar and MC Devesh. My playlist is full of independent artistes,” and assures us that it will always be like this.
