The combined market valuation of all companies listed on leading stock exchange BSE today breached the USD 4 trillion mark for the first time.
After a positive start to the day, the 30-share BSE Sensex rose 305.44 points to 66,479.64 in early trade.
Riding on optimism in equities, the market capitalisation of BSE-listed companies rose to ₹3,33,26,881.49 crore in morning trade, equivalent to USD 4 trillion at the exchange rate of 83.31.
The BSE benchmark Sensex has rallied 5,540.52 points or 9.10 per cent so far this year, while the market capitalisation (m-cap) of all companies listed on its platform has increased by nearly Rs 50.81 lakh crore.
The 30-stock benchmark had hit its all-time peak of 67,927.23 points on September 15 this year.
Other markets with market capitalizations over US$4 trillion include the US, China, Japan, and Hong Kong.
On May 24, 2021, the market capitalisation of all companies listed on the BSE touched the US$3 trillion mark.
The exchange saw the valuation of listed companies breach the US$1 trillion mark on 28 May 2007.
The journey from US$1 trillion to US$1.5 trillion on June 6, 2014 was completed in 2,566 days or almost seven years.
The market capitalisation of its listed companies reached US$2 trillion on 10 July 2017 – 1,130 days after hitting the US$1.5 trillion mark.
From there, it took 1,255 days to cross the USD 2.5 trillion mark on December 16, 2020.
