CCS Approves Rs 27,000 Crore Project to Launch 52 Spy Satellites for India’s Space Surveillance

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the launch of 52 spy satellites under phase III of the Space Based Surveillance (SBS-III) program. The initiative, which will cost Rs 27,000 crore, aims to enhance India’s space-based surveillance capabilities, particularly in low Earth and geostationary orbits.

Strengthening India’s Border and Maritime Surveillance

These satellites will be launched over the next five years to bolster India’s surveillance over its land and maritime borders, amid increasing security concerns on the western front with Pakistan and the northern front with China. Additionally, India is stepping up sea surveillance due to heightened activities by Chinese spy vessels and submarines in the Indian Ocean.
