Jay Shah was on Tuesday elected unopposed as the independent chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The current honorary secretary of the BCCI will assume his position at the ICC on December 1, 2024. After the election, Shah, who was the only nominee for the post of president, emphasised his commitment to expanding cricket’s global reach and popularity, especially with its upcoming inclusion in the LA 2028 Olympics.

Although he was elected unopposed, according to a report news18.com has claimed to have revealed some inside details of what happened in the ICC meeting.

The report said that the ICC currently has 16 members. It claimed that Shah had the support of 15 members while filing the nomination. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) remained a mute spectator.

“There was no comment from the PCB. Not that it was needed as Shah had the backing of the members. But the Pakistan board preferred to play the role of a spectator throughout the entire process,” the report quoted a source as saying.

After his election, Jai Shah said, “I am overwhelmed by my nomination as President of the International Cricket Council.”

“I am committed to working closely with the ICC team and our Member States to make cricket more global. We are at a critical juncture where it is vital to balance the coexistence of different formats, promote the adoption of advanced technologies and introduce our flagship events to new global markets. Our goal is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever before.”

“While we will build on the valuable lessons learned, we must also embrace new thinking and innovation to continue spreading the love of cricket around the world. The inclusion of our sport in the LA 2028 Olympics represents a turning point for the development of cricket, and I am confident it will propel the sport forward in an unprecedented way.”
