Justice Sanjiv Khanna has officially taken oath as the 51st Chief Justice of India, succeeding Justice DY Chandrachud. At 64, Justice Khanna will serve a six-month tenure until May 13, 2025. His appointment was confirmed on October 24, following the recommendation by his predecessor on October 16.

Family Legacy in Law

Hailing from a distinguished legal family, Justice Khanna is the son of Justice Dev Raj Khanna, a former Delhi High Court judge. His uncle, Justice HR Khanna, is remembered for his dissent in the ADM Jabalpur case during the Emergency. Justice Sanjiv Khanna began his legal career in 1983, initially practicing in district courts before moving to the Delhi High Court.
