Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez handed five-match international ban for brawling with fans after Uruguay’s Copa America exit

Uruguay striker Darwin Nunez has been banned for five international matches, while several other players have also been suspended for their involvement in the offence. Clashes with fans After Uruguay’s Copa América Defeat by Colombia South American football’s governing body said on Wednesday that the tournament will be played in July.

Rodrigo Bentancur was handed a four-match ban, while Ronald Araújo, José María Gimenez and Mathias Oliveira were handed three-match suspensions each.

Following Colombia’s 1–0 win in the Copa America semi-final, Uruguay players climbed into the stands and scuffled with opposition fans.

Uruguay captain Gimenez said the players were trying to protect their families.

The Uruguayan FA was also fined $20,000 and a total of 11 players were penalised for their involvement in the brawl. Nunez was fined $20,000, Bentancur $16,000 and Araujo, Oliveira and Gimenez were fined $12,000.

The players will have to serve their suspensions in Uruguay’s next official matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

In September they face Paraguay in Montevideo and Venezuela in Maturin; Peru (away) and Ecuador (at home) in October; Colombia (at home) and Brazil (away) in November. (Reporting by Tommy Lund and Fernando Calas in Gdansk; Editing by Toby Davis)
