Ferry Collision Causes Panic Off Mumbai Coast
A tragic accident unfolded near Mumbai as a Navy speedboat undergoing engine trials lost control and collided with a passenger ferry. The ferry, traveling from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, was carrying 110 passengers. The collision caused panic as the ferry started sinking, and passengers screamed for help.
Passengers Rescued-Operations in Full Swing
The Indian Navy and Coast Guard immediately launched coordinated rescue efforts. Four naval helicopters, 11 naval craft, and multiple boats from the Coast Guard and Marine Police were deployed. Survivors were quickly transferred to nearby hospitals, while the tragic death toll rose to 13, including 10 ferry passengers and three individuals aboard the Navy craft.
Statements and Compensation Announced
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and announced financial aid of ₹2 lakh for the deceased’s families and ₹50,000 for the injured. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared an additional ₹5 lakh compensation for the victims. The Colaba Police have initiated an FIR, and investigations are underway.
