Renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, known for his iconic films like Satya and Rangeela, has been sentenced to three months in jail by the Andheri Magistrate Court in a cheque bounce case. The verdict, stemming from a seven-year-old case involving ₹2.38 lakh, also includes a non-bailable warrant (NBW) for his arrest as he failed to attend the hearing.

Mr. Varma responded, saying, “This is not about settling the amount but about resisting exploitation in fabricated attempts.” The cheque, issued by his firm, could not be encashed, violating Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.

Compensation Ordered

The court has also directed Mr. Varma to compensate the complainant ₹3.72 lakh within three months or face an additional three months of imprisonment. The filmmaker’s financial troubles, exacerbated during the pandemic, have been highlighted, including selling his office to manage debts.

The case was filed in 2018 by Shree, a company represented by Maheshchandra Mishra. Despite bail granted in 2022, Magistrate YP Pujari clarified that Mr. Varma was not eligible for a set-off under Section 428 of the CrPC, as he spent no time in custody.
