Witnesses described a crushing wave of people with no clear exits, no medical response teams in sight, and complete administrative chaos, which led to a stampede and the deaths of eleven people. What started out as a joyful gathering of thousands of fans to celebrate RCB’s first IPL title swiftly turned into a nightmare due to overcrowding, inadequate police presence, a failure to implement basic crowd control protocols, and uncoordinated communication between event organizers and civic authorities.
We can’t say, it is just a defeat of our logistics. As it is clearly a failure of our nation’s system. And its national significance has increased because it took place under the auspices of one of the most well-known IPL teams.
The fallout has been severe and rapid. A formal complaint has been filed against the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), RCB, and DNA Entertainment, an event management company. The state judiciary has already started considering petitions from the relatives of the victims, and charges of criminal negligence are being looked into. Bengaluru police also detained Nikhil Sosale, the franchise’s head of marketing and a worker for RCB’s parent company Diageo, on Friday.

The BCCI’s Conundrum: Should It Protect or Punish RCB?
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently in a vulnerable situation. Its flagship product is the Indian Premier League, a multibillion-dollar competition that depends on fan loyalty, business alliances, and brand value to succeed. However, inaction in the face of such a tragedy could have disastrous optics.
As a franchise program, BCCI has already disassociated itself from the victory celebration. Devajit Saikia, the secretary of the BCCI, also described it as “an unfortunate incident,” but should the franchise be held accountable? We’ll have to wait and see.
