Captain Rohit Sharma stunned fans with his retirement , revealed through a surprising Instagram Story, just days before India’s squad selection for the England tour. The 38-year-old Rohit’s Test Retirement confirmed he’ll continue playing ODIs for India, focusing on Rohit’s Insta Announcement and ODI Continuation.
Rohit, a stalwart of Indian cricket, played 67 Tests, amassing 4301 runs, and led India in 24 matches, leaving a significant legacy. His decision to step away from Tests, ahead of India’s England Tour, marks a pivotal shift, with selectors now tasked to reshape the leadership and batting lineup.
On Wednesday, May 7, India captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on Instagram Stories, reaffirming his intention to play ODI cricket for his country. Fans were taken aback by Rohit’s Instagram reveal, which came in the middle of the 2025 IPL season and just one day after he made an appearance for the Mumbai Indians against the Gujarat Titans at Wankhede, causing an IPL Mid-Season Shock and causing him to turn his attention to his ODI career.
“Hello everyone. I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It’s been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format”
— Rohit said in an Instagram story sharing a photo of his Test cap.
Rohit’s Sudden Retirement Move
Rohit Sharma’s Test Retirement announcement came mere hours after sources informed India Today that the senior men’s selection committee was set to name a new captain for the England Test tour, beginning June 20, shaking up the England Tour Selection.
It was unclear if Rohit would have joined as a specialist batter for the five-match series, but his decision to step away from Tests, while continuing in ODIs, preempted the committee’s plans to appoint a New Test Captain.
Rohit retired from T20Is after winning the T20 World Cup in 2024. He is expected to continue playing one-dayers until the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be played in Africa.
