He said, “Some people complain that there is a lot of humour but less horror or vice versa but these are not horror films where real ghosts are haunting people. All our ghosts are the delusions of our society. Sarkata is the most distorted form of patriarchy. Woman She is a symbol of matriarchy, she is not a witch. The wolf is the protector of the forests. We have designed these characters in a special way. We are not talking about witchcraft or sudden spirits.”
In conversation with Bollywood HungamaNiren Bhatt explained how the idea of Sarakata as a character came about. He said, “The cave where the woman’s braid was chopped off in the first film has her backstory through graffiti in the destroyed idols, which states that she had a lover when she was a sex worker. The lover was shown headless. Now whether the head was chopped off because it was a destroyed idol, or someone cut it off, is not even mentioned in the first film. But after looking at it we thought we could make a demon out of her whose head is missing.”
He added, “But he can’t be the woman’s lover because he was killed and why would he go against the woman and become a threat to others? Then the idea came to my mind that he must be the person who killed the woman and her lover and became responsible for making her a woman. That way he became a symbol of patriarchy.”
