The Legacy of Thiruvannamalai Maha Deepam
The globally renowned Thiruvannamalai Maha Deepam, a significant event of the Karthigai Deepam festival, is celebrated annually at the Annamalaiyar Temple. The Maha Deepam, lit atop the 2,668-ft-high hill, attracts millions of devotees worldwide, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness.
Who Are Parvatha Rajakulathar?
The responsibility of lighting the Maha Deepam lies with the Parvatha Rajakulathar community. Believed to be descendants of Parvatha Raja, with roots in Tamil folklore, they have carried out this sacred task for over 15 generations. Often associated with fishing, they are also referred to as “Meenavars” or “Sembadavars.
The Sacred Process of Lighting the Maha Deepam
Before lighting the Maha Deepam, the chosen individuals observe a 48-day fasting ritual. A lamp lit at the temple is carried up the hill in an earthen pot. The journey is challenging, but their faith and tradition ensure the sacred flame reaches the hilltop without extinguishing.
