He recalled, “She broke down, she cried, raved, ranted, locked herself in a room. Then, I called her up after a week and said, ‘You’re playing Gangubai’.”
From Hollywood to Kamathipura: A Tough Shift for Alia
Initially, Bhatt struggled with the transition. She had prepared herself for a character in Los Angeles and suddenly found herself in the gritty streets of Kamathipura. She expressed her doubts, saying, “I was going to play a character in Los Angeles, and now I’ve come to Kamathipura, how will I do it? I don’t know this character.”
Finding Strength in Gangubai’s Role
Despite her initial hesitations, Alia Bhatt eventually embraced the role of Gangubai Kathiawadi, and her portrayal of the character went on to earn widespread critical acclaim, cementing her place as one of Bollywood’s top performers.
