Much to the delight of music lovers in NCR, the incessant rains over the weekend abated and the gods showed mercy, allowing the sixth edition of Radio 93.5 Red FM’s South Side Story to go off smoothly at the capital’s Indira Gandhi Stadium.
Annual Festival, in Print Partnership the hinduThere was a lineup of fine artistes and none disappointed the audience. Among the stellar performances, renowned Carnatic musician, writer and activist, TM Krishna stood out. As Krishna himself said, it was unusual for a classical artiste to be part of a festival dedicated to a different genre of music. Yet, this soulful singer mesmerized the youth who were seeking and immersed in contemporary music.
Krishna sang 19 songsth century Tamil writer Subramania Bharati’s poem on women empowerment and the poems of Kerala’s spiritual reformer Sri Narayana Guru. His rendition of Muthuswami Dikshitar’s songs inspired by Western orchestral music played by British bands 200 years ago enthralled the audience. He concluded the programme with a wonderful rendition of poet Dwijendralal Ray’s famous patriotic Bengali song ‘Dhan Dhanya Pushpa Bhara’. The fast-paced jugalbandhi between the ghatam and mridangam artists accompanying him and the solos of the violinist kept the audience completely captivated.

The two-day event, held on August 31 and September 1, began with Khatija Rahman singing songs in her melodious voice, including ‘Ulagam Oru Naal’.,Anabendra Mazhaiyilae’ and ‘Latika Theme’. Sean Roldan and friends then increased the tempo, electrifying the crowd. They performed ‘Maya’, ‘Mandira’ and a song from their new album.
A captivating rendition of ‘Bhagavathi’ in Malayalam by Sithara’s Project Malabaricus, replete with powerful lyrics and heavy instrumental music, was a great start for the group. Lead singer Sithara Krishnakumar then sang her evergreen song ‘Rithu’.The crowd also joined in. He sang ‘Kadha’ and ‘Aruthruth, Aruthruth’ among other songs.
The crowd was then treated to some rousing singing, guitar playing and drumming by Agam The Band. They danced and sang along when the group sang ‘Celestial Nymph’.,Rangpura Viharaya,Other tracks include ‘Boat Song’ and ‘Koothu Over Coffee’.

Nithya Mammen rocked the second day by singing a fun song called ‘Chinnamma’, after which she sang her first playback song ‘Nee Himamzhaayi’. With her powerful voice and excellent music, she made the audience crazy. She also sang the popular song ‘Jo Bheji Thi Dua’.From the movie Shanghai Originally sung by Arijit Singh and Nandini Sarkar.
Kannada rapper and singer All OK takes the stage after Mamman with the song ‘Naavu Last Bench’From a 2017 Kannada film College KumarHis other songs include ‘Don’t Worry’, ‘Jai Ganesha’ and the peppy ‘Maramman Disco’.
Malavika Sundar sang several songs, including ‘Nee Ennai Vittu Potta’, a touching song about a break-up, ‘Akka Nee Enga Pora’, and her latest song ‘Potti’, released on Sunday. Her impressive stage presence grabbed the full attention of the audience.
The crowd’s wish came true as their favourite Job Kurien came on stage with a megaphone. The songs that came one after another featured his powerful voice and of course the brilliant guitar pieces. The group attracted a huge crowd dancing, singing and grooving to ‘Padyatra’ and other songs.
The audience went wild and Arivu and The Ambasas took over the stage. They kept the rhythm going and took it to another level with songs like ‘Tamil Vazhthu’.,Songs like ‘Valliamma’ and ‘Feel Like a Panther’ kept the audience enthralled. Arivu performed all over the stage and kept the audience captivated throughout the event.
The event concluded with a performance by Thaikkudam Bridge which brought the audience to a climax. Their songs were passionate, musical and connected with the audience so much that despite the long evening, everyone had enough enthusiasm and energy to clap and dance.
The festival venue also had several stalls serving delicious South Indian cuisine and beverages, handicraft items and gajra counters.
