The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Tuesday (September 3, 2024) disposed of the petition against the release of the film starring Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Kangana Ranaut. emergency, The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) said the film’s approval has been withheld.
However, a division bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva and Justice Vinay Saraf directed the CBFC to consider the issues raised in the petition objecting to various portions of the film’s trailer.
Earlier on Monday (September 2, 2024), the High Court had issued notices to Ranaut, her production house Manikarnika Films, the CBFC, the Central and Madhya Pradesh governments, Zee Studios, among other bodies associated with the upcoming film.
The writ petition was filed by two Sikh organisations – Jabalpur Sikh Sangat and Guru Singh Sabha, Indore – objecting to the film’s trailer and its portrayal of people from the Sikh community. The petitioners alleged that several scenes in the film violate the fundamental rights of Sikhs and demanded an unconditional apology from Ranaut.

The CBFC said a certificate had already been issued to the film but was withheld following objections from various Sikh organisations.
Noting the pending certification of the film by the competent authority CBFC, the court refused to pass any order and said there was no point in “prejudicing” the matter.
“The Disciplinary Deputy Solicitor General has further stated that in view of the directions and the fact that the film has not yet been certified and is being examined in terms of the Cinematograph Act and the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, if any further representation is received from any organisation/institution/individual, the same will be taken into consideration while considering certification of the film,” the court said.
The petitioners also told the court that they have also raised their objections before the CBFC chairman against the release of the film.
“In view of the above, this petition is disposed of by permitting the petitioners to file a comprehensive representation before the Central Board of Film Certification regarding their objections to the certification of the film and the trailer within a period of three days from today. On receipt of the representation, the Board shall consider the objections to the film and take appropriate action, if required, in respect of the trailer, in accordance with the Act and the rules made thereunder, before certifying the film,” the court directed.
The film is also written by Ranaut and is a biopic of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Originally announced to release in November 2023, the date has been postponed multiple times with the makers announcing the latest release date of September 6. However, with the CBFC certification still pending, there is no clarity on whether the film will release on the coming Friday (September 6, 2024).
