Mumbai:
Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor Khan on Tuesday said she is happy to have got the opportunity to work with Hansal Mehta in his upcoming film “The Buckingham Murders”. She praised the filmmaker for making her feel comfortable on the sets.
Kareena Kapoor Khan is also making her production debut in this murder mystery based in the UK. In it, she will play the role of Jasmeet Bhamra aka Jas, a policeman who is grieving the death of her child. She is assigned the task of investigating a missing child.
Kareena praised Hansal for maintaining the authenticity of the story.
“This film would not have been possible without the person who is the captain of the ship, Hansal Mehta. The way he has shot it, the way he has cast me in the character, has made me very comfortable… We liked the idea of this story; we liked the script… There is no one better than Hansal to make this film, which has such a good subject matter. He has paid full attention to the authenticity of the film…
“When Hansal sent me this film, I thought ‘we have to make this’. I think we made it, that is the most important thing. I am very happy that in my career graph, I got an opportunity to work with him. I am very happy that this is one film where I feel this character is the most special for me,” he told reporters here.
The actor was speaking at the trailer launch of “The Buckingham Murders”, which is also produced by Ekta Kapoor and Shobha Kapoor under Balaji Telefilms and TBM Films.
The film is releasing in original language (English and Hindi) as well as in Hindi language version.
Kareena said that today language is not a barrier in cinema.
“I don’t think it’s a different kind of cinema. Today, you can’t say that because a film has song and dance, you’ll put it in a box that it’s a mass picture. If a film is good, people will watch it…
“She (the character Jas) lives in the UK, so when you are there, you only speak to people in English. So the characters who know Hindi, we speak to them in Hindi, the ones who know English, we speak to them in English. So it’s a different mix and I think he has been perfect in shooting this film and making this film with the right spirit.” He also described producer Ekta as the “backbone” of the film.
“I want to thank my friend Ekta, who has always supported me and said, ‘We will do this, we will do this together’. Whatever we have done, we have always been very successful. I am very confident this time too. It is going to be great.” Hansal, known for films such as “Shahid”, “Citylights” as well as the web series “Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story”, said his new film has universal appeal.
He said, “It is important to bring authenticity. A person watching it in London will feel that it is his film and a person watching it here will connect with the emotion of the mother. The emotion of a mother is universal and the whole world connects with it. It is not just pan-Indian, we have made a Hindi version as well. I see this film not as pan-Indian but pan-world.”
Kareena said that a mother’s feelings have no language.
“It’s a feeling. And Jas is a mother. And it’s her journey as well, apart from the investigation. So, I think being a mother herself, she understands the fact that a mother’s love has no language. Her eyes show both love and pain, and nothing else is important.”
He said, “I think that’s what connected me to the character… somehow it had so much soul that I felt this was the right time to feel and play the character.”
Ekta, who has worked with Kareena in films like “Udta Punjab”, “Veere Di Wedding” and “Crew”, said “The Buckingham Murders” is a “complete change” for Kareena.
“I have worked with Kareena in four films so far. She is a star, but she is also a great actress… I felt we have a woman who has the stature and power. Stories cannot be brought to the public in a medium that is completely driven by men, by a completely different kind of commerce unless you use your intelligence to make it commercial…
He added, “Also, support it with a great actor and a great star. I knew it would require an actor agreeing to present herself in a different film. And I was sure only Kareena was brave and legitimate in terms of stardom. We approached her, we had decided that if she says ‘yes’, this film will be made. And she joined us as an actor and a producer.”
“The Buckingham Murders” also stars Ash Tandon, Ranveer Brar and Keith Allen. It is written by Aseem Arora, Kashyap Kapoor and Raghav Raj Kakkar. It is scheduled to release in theatres on September 13. PTI SSG RDS BK BK
