Bangladesh opener Shadman Islam missed a hundred by just seven runs but still led Bangladesh to an impressive 316/5 on the third day of the first Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi on Friday (August 23, 2024).
The left-handed batsman played a patient knock of 93 runs off 183 balls to keep alive the visitors’ chances of a draw or their first win in the 14th Test against Pakistan.
At the end of the match, veteran batsman Mushfiqur Rahim was unbeaten on 55 runs while Liton Das was unbeaten on 52. They shared an unbroken 98-run partnership for the sixth wicket to give Bangladesh the lead.
Bangladesh trail Pakistan’s score of 448-6 by 132 runs with five wickets in hand as the Rawalpindi Stadium pitch was unfavourable for the bowlers – all but ending Pakistan’s hopes of a big lead.
Rahim completed his 28th Test half-century by hitting the seventh four off Shaheen Shah Afridi. Das also completed his half-century with three fours and a six in an over from Naseem Shah after Pakistan took the second new ball.
But Bangladesh’s resistance was led by Shadman.
The 29-year-old left-handed batsman was close to his second hundred just before tea but was bowled by a fast delivery from Pakistan pacer Mohammad Ali in the final over before tea.
Pakistan also lost Shakib Al Hasan for 15 as the top all-rounder played a loose shot against Saim Ayub and the part-time spinner picked up his first wicket in his first Test over.
Fast bowler Khurram Shahzad took two wickets for 47 runs while Naseem Shah, Mohammad Ali and Ayub got one wicket each. Fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi could not take a single wicket in 18 overs.
Earlier, Shadman added 52 for the fourth wicket with Rahim after sharing a 94-run opening stand with Mominul Haque (50).
Shadman stayed at the crease for 5 hours and 29 minutes and hit 12 fours.
Haque was the only batsman to get out in the post-lunch session when he missed a delivery from Shehzad and was bowled. He hit five boundaries in his 76-ball innings.
It was Shadman who steadied his team’s fight as Pakistan’s pace attack looked less than impressive on the Rawalpindi Stadium pitch.
The Shadman-Haq partnership helped Pakistan bounce back after the dismissals of Zakir Hasan (12) and skipper Nazmul Hossain Shanto (16) in the extended three-hour session due to Friday prayers.
Pakistan included all four fast bowlers but were unable to secure the services of a main spinner.
Part-time slow bowler Agha Salman had Shadman trapped lbw for 57 but the decision was overturned on review.
Resuming at 27-0, Bangladesh lost the wicket of Zakir in the fifth over of the day to wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan, who dived to his left and took a one-handed catch.
Shanto looked good during his short innings but was bowled between bat and pad by Shehzad, leaving the visitors at 53-2.
The second and final Test will also be played in Rawalpindi from August 30 – the series is part of the third cycle (2023-2025) of the nine-team World Test Championship.
