The Income Tax Department recently trended on Google, with taxpayers voicing frustration over delayed refunds. Even though the tax filing deadline passed on July 31, 2024, a significant number of returns remain unprocessed, leaving many without their expected refunds.
This year, more than 7.51 crore income tax returns (ITRs) were filed, of which 7.37 crore have been verified. However, only around 6.38 crore ITRs have been processed for refunds. This leaves over 99 lakh returns—roughly 13.2% of the total—still pending processing. Taxpayers affected by the delay are growing increasingly concerned as the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) works to resolve the backlog.
The ongoing situation has led to a surge in online interest, with many people turning to Google to seek answers or updates on their tax refunds.
