Chandrababu Naidu’s population strategy: Concern Over Andhra Pradesh’s Ageing Population

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu expressed growing concern over the state’s ageing population and urged couples to have more children. The CM highlighted that the younger generation’s migration to other regions and countries has left several districts with predominantly elderly residents. Naidu emphasized the need to address this demographic challenge by promoting population growth within the state.

Incentivizing Larger Families and Election Rules

In line with his strategy, Naidu disclosed that his government intends to incentivize families with more children. He noted that the population growth rate in Andhra Pradesh has fallen to 1.6%, a sharp contrast to India’s overall average of 2.1% as of 2021. To further encourage population growth, Naidu’s government plans to repeal the previous law that barred individuals with more than two children from contesting local body elections.

New Legislation Proposal for Local Elections

The CM also revealed a bold legislative move: only individuals with two or more children will be eligible to participate in local body elections. “We will bring in a new law to make only those with more than two children eligible to contest,” he stated. Naidu believes this approach will promote larger families while addressing the challenges posed by an ageing population.

Focus on Andhra’s Development and Future Generations

Naidu made these comments while flagging off the resumption of construction in Amaravati, a project halted under the previous government. The CM underscored the importance of future generations for Andhra Pradesh’s development and emphasized the need to tackle demographic changes through policy adjustments that favor larger families and incentivize growth.
